SPAR just announced their partnership with this &#8220;gesture-detection&#8221; technology in February 2026, rolling it out across their stores.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Most shocking part? You probably had zero idea it was happening.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A January 2026 study by VoCoVo surveyed 503 British shoppers and found that <strong>57% are completely unaware that AI-driven security is currently being used in the stores they visit regularly<\/strong>. The screen replays video footage of your &#8220;mistake&#8221; back to you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Tesco pioneered this in May 2025. Lidl followed in July 2025 with identical systems across London stores. The AI doesn&#8217;t just count items &#8211; it identifies what each product is and cross-references with what you actually scanned.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sainsbury&#8217;s went a different direction. They trialled live facial recognition in their Sydenham store in September 2025 using a system called Facewatch. They also launched something called ELEVATE in 2025 &#8211; an AI network that tracks your movements around the store and serves you personalized ads based on what sections you lingered in.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/discountagent.co.uk\/home-bargains\">Home Bargains<\/a> and B&amp;M<\/strong> are long-term partners with Facewatch. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/london\/comments\/1qphepo\/sainsburys_extends_facial_recognition_tech_to\/\">Same facial recognition setup as Sainsbury&#8217;s<\/a>. You know surveillance is happening, even if you don&#8217;t know the AI is analyzing your face.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Online? You&#8217;ve got no idea what&#8217;s tracking you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Retailers watch every product you click on, how long you hover over items, what you add to your cart and then remove, what device you&#8217;re using, what time of day you shop, whether you&#8217;re a first-time visitor or returning customer. They track your location, your browsing history from other sites (via cookies), even the speed you scroll.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That data builds a profile. And once they have a profile, prices can change.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dynamic pricing isn&#8217;t theoretical. Retailers adjust what you see based on what they know about you. You&#8217;ve searched for a specific TV three times this week? The price might go up on your fourth visit. You&#8217;re browsing from a wealthy postcode? Higher prices. You&#8217;re using a Mac instead of a Windows PC? Studies have shown companies sometimes charge Apple users more because the data suggests they&#8217;re willing to pay premium prices.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A survey by Apply Digital found that <strong>38% of British shoppers plan to reject third-party cookies when Google introduces its new Chrome opt-in model<\/strong>. Another 22% are undecided. That stops some geo-based price discrimination. If you&#8217;re comparing flight prices or hotel rates, using a VPN to appear as though you&#8217;re browsing from a different country can sometimes show you lower prices.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But VPNs have limitations. Your IP stays the same throughout your browsing session. Retailers can still track patterns &#8211; this IP address visited 5 times today, searched for these specific products, added this to cart. Even if they don&#8217;t know your physical location, they&#8217;re still building a profile tied to that IP.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/proxys.io\/en\/p\/rotating-proxies\">Rotating proxy servers<\/a><\/strong> fix that problem.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A rotating proxy constantly switches your IP address as you browse. Every few requests, you appear to be coming from a completely different location. One search looks like it&#8217;s from London, the next from Manchester, the next from Edinburgh. Retailers can&#8217;t connect the dots because there&#8217;s no consistent identifier.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For someone genuinely worried about being profiled &#8211; maybe you&#8217;re comparison shopping for insurance and don&#8217;t want your 5th quote request to trigger higher prices, or you&#8217;re researching products and don&#8217;t want targeted ads following you around for weeks &#8211; rotating proxies work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They&#8217;re overkill for casual browsing. Most people don&#8217;t need this level of privacy protection just to buy groceries online. But if you&#8217;ve noticed that prices change when you search repeatedly, or if you&#8217;re sick of seeing ads for that one thing you looked at three weeks ago, it&#8217;s the tool that actually stops the tracking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Setting up rotating proxies requires a bit more technical knowledge than just installing a VPN. You&#8217;re routing your traffic through multiple servers that change automatically. Some services handle this for you (you pay for access to their proxy network), others require manual configuration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Is it worth it? Depends on how much you value not being watched.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-the-bigger-picture-you-re-stuck-in\"><strong>The Bigger Picture You&#8217;re Stuck In<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>84% of shoppers still rely on human staff when they&#8217;re in stores<\/strong>, according to the VoCoVo report. <strong>40% would stop shopping at a store that was entirely self-service<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>People want human interaction. They want to be able to ask someone where the pasta sauce is, or if an item&#8217;s in stock, or whether this jacket comes in a different size.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What they don&#8217;t want is to be treated like a potential criminal every time they pick up a loaf of bread.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The retailers&#8217; argument is that they need these systems because of rising theft. Shoplifting in England and Wales hit 530,643 recorded offences in the year to March 2025 &#8211; a 20% increase and the highest level since records began in 2003. Retail losses from theft hit \u00a34.2 billion annually.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Fair enough. Theft is a real problem.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But the solution can&#8217;t be &#8220;scan everyone&#8217;s face and build a national database of suspected shoplifters run by private companies with minimal oversight.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Facewatch reported sending <strong>516,739 alerts to UK retailers in 2025<\/strong> &#8211; double the previous year. That&#8217;s over half a million times someone walked into a shop and got flagged by an algorithm. How many of those were accurate? How many were false positives? There&#8217;s no public data on that.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You&#8217;re being watched in Tesco, tracked online by every retailer&#8217;s website, profiled by algorithms that decide if you look suspicious or if you&#8217;re willing to pay more for the same product.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And most people &#8211; 57% according to that VoCoVo study &#8211; don&#8217;t even know it&#8217;s happening.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Next time you&#8217;re in Sainsbury&#8217;s, look up. Those aren&#8217;t just security cameras anymore. They&#8217;re AI systems analyzing your face, your behavior, your choices.
